The latest unemployment figures, especially youth unemployment at almost one million, ought to send shudders through our ruling elite says Tommy Morrison in Glasgow, convenor of the communist party Unemployment Advisory Committee [UAC].
The UAC is charged with developing communist party policy in support of the unemployed and moiling all workers to fight against speed-up, job loss. CP members and supporters can get involved in the work of the UAC and the next meeting is in Preston on 15 October.
Says Tommy, "The ruling class courts may be dishing out 'somewhat hysterical' sentences to youngsters involved in the disturbances but given that, when twenty per cent of 16-24 years olds are out of work, it is doubtful the government with their vicious response will be able to cap the fury among many young people in working class areas."
Add the cuts in Housing Benefit, attacks on Disability Living Allowance, the Work Capability Assessment being used by the discredited ATOS to get people off Employment Support Allowance/Incapacity Benefit, the increase in the retirement age and it can be seen that the anger covers the entire age spectrum.
The trade union movement should be seen as the champions of welfare claimants and channel the anger of our youth and others into class politics and the fight for a socialist alternative. All the talk is of the challenges to Government policy and this is correct because many of the problems arise as a result of that policy. But there is a big challenge to our labour movement and the issues raised in recent weeks, placed alongside unemployment of 3 millions and more, must find expression at the forthcoming TUC Congress in September.
Communists who are unemployed or have a special interest in opposing the dismantling of social provision in the Welfare State should attend the CPB's Unemployment Advisory on 15 October.
