'The labour movement in Britain cannot afford any confusion about the character of the European Union and the role of its powerful, unelected institutions', John Foster declared.

Morning Star political editor John Haylett accused the EU today of carrying out coups d'etat in Greece and Italy at the behest of the banks.
He told the Communist Party executive committee in London: "While we have no time for either Silvio Berlusconi or George Papandreou, they were elected to office and should have answered to their own electorate not to unelected EU bureaucrats."
Mr Haylett noted that both politicians would be replaced by so-called technocrats who have spent their working lives in the service of the banking sector.
He said European states were witnessing a generalised assault on working people's jobs, services, pensions and living standards on the orders of those who had precipitated the recent financial crisis.
It was incumbent on the workers of each country to organise to frustrate the capitalists' machinations, he added, paying tribute to the leading resistance role played in Greece by the Communist Party and its trade union organisation PAME.
Mr Haylett called on Communists and their supporters to not only make a success of the strike action called by Britain's public-service unions on November 30 but to help make the many protest demonstrations on that day "a mighty expression of popular anger against the entire coalition cuts agenda."
